Contribute to Camp GLOW 2007!

As most of you know, I have been working the past two years as one of the directors of Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World). Every summer, 100 young women aged 14 to 17 come together from all over Moldova to take part in this week-long camp, the goals of which are to empower girls and provide them with information and education that will help them to become stronger leaders in their communities, schools, and the world.

GLOW strives to provide information that our participants are unlikely to have access to in their schools or communities, and when seeking participants we target young women from rural areas, low income families, orphanages, and others who are considered at-risk and the most in need of the GLOW experience. Courses and activities are tailored to the particular needs of young Moldovan women and the issues their country faces today, and include: conflict resolution, community activism, breast cancer, domestic violence, reproductive health/puberty, team building, and many more. At the same time, GLOW also provides participants the opportunity to participate in many of the traditional American camp activities you may remember from your own childhood camp experiences, such as arts and crafts, tie-dye, pinata making, and making s'mores around a bonfire.

I am writing today in the hopes that you will set aside a few minutes from your busy day to make a small donation to GLOW. We only ask a contribution of 130 lei (about $10) from each participant, in order to keep GLOW accessible to the neediest young women here in Moldova, the poorest country in Europe. However, as you can imagine the proceeds of participant fees do little to offset the costs of conducting GLOW each year.

Our Peace Corps Partnership Grant in the amount of $1,050.00 is currently posted on the web here, where you can make a quick, convenient and tax-deductible donation. Don’t be mistaken…every dollar truly does count! If every person gave $10, we would only need 105 people to donate! Consider setting aside the cost of one ticket to the movies, and giving that $10 instead to help make GLOW a reality again this year for young Moldovan women.

Your gift will continue to live on through the girls that are affected by this camp and go on to share their leadership skills, knowledge and enthusiasm with their families and communities. All contributions that you make really will help to change the world.
