Turkish Delight

One of the unexpected side-effects of indicating Moldova as my location on my myspace page has been a number of amorous emails from Turkish* men looking, presumably, for an Eastern European girlfriend. Last night I regaled PCV friends with a reading of the most recent additions from men who, by the way, are either not very observant (it's obvious from my page that I'm American) or perhaps just not, uh, interested in the finer points of who I am, leading to the creation of a new inside joke among us: "I want to make friendship with you!" (Variations include: "I want to make friendship with you...all night long" and "I'll be out in a minute, I'm just making friendship.") And today I'll share them with you!

But first, why Turkish guys? I've got my theories. There is an interesting relationship between Turkey and Moldova. First, travel to Turkey is relatively cheap (you can fly for about $150) and easy, and most importantly, Moldovans are welcome. This can't be said for the many other countries who have stiff visa regulations making it nearly impossible for Moldovans to travel, particularly young women. [For more on why that is, read up on Moldova's human trafficking issues.] Take these factors and add in that Moldovan women tend to be quite pretty, flashy dressers, and probably appear "exotic" to Turkish men, especially those living in communities where women dress in a more conservative way. In any case, it could shed some light on why I am such a hot mama in the eyes of a very particular demographic, for no apparent reason other than the country of residence I selected on a particular website. (Well, that and my smokin' hotness, right?)
